Today a common practice of foam insulation is to foam the underside of the roof deck, and conditioning your attic space where your HVAC unit is located. When they do this no insulation is placed above the ceiling thereby leaving a flanking path for sound to travel. A flanking path is basically the path of least resistance, so sound will travel through your sheet rock ceiling where there is no insulation and into the next room.
